Visual Noise – Detroit
Because fashion shouldn't be quiet.

It started with one glove.

In 2008, Daune Smith was visiting The Style Gallery, a boutique in her Detroit neighborhood, when one of the owners pointed to a magazine photo of a knitted fingerless glove. She wished she knew someone who could make it. Daune said she could. She went home, made it, and brought it back.

That was the beginning of Visual Noise.

Fashion that dances. Garments that fly.

Daune is a needle artist. Every Visual Noise piece is crocheted, knitted or sewn by her own hands in Detroit: chunky crochet bombers with scale-stitched sleeves, floor-length granny square dusters, breezy dashiki caftans, and hats with personality. Because each one is made by hand, no two are exactly alike. When a piece is gone, it's gone.

Built with grit and a plan.

Daune didn't just learn her craft; she learned the business behind it. She grew Visual Noise through the Detroit Garment Group's Fashion Incubator at TechTown and through programs like ProsperUs and SCORE, and her work has been carried in Detroit boutiques. She's still learning and still creating, and she's still making noise.
